로마 가톨릭 교회의 프란체스코 교황은 1일 올해 12월에 시작되는 카톨릭 중요 행사 <자비의 희년(Jubilee of Mercy)>에 향하는 서한에서 카톨릭이 금지하는 낙태를 회개하는 여성 신자들을 '용서'하는 재량을 신부들에게 인정한다고 표명했습니다.

 

교황은 '마음에 상처를 가진 많은 여성들을 만나왔다'며 낙태를 결단한 여성은 선택의 여지가 없어 고통 받고 있다고 지적했습니다. 낙태는 죄악이라는 카톨릭의 입장을 재천명하면서 '하나님의 용서는 회개하는 사람을 부정하지 않는다'며 신부들에게 자신의 생각에 대한 이해를 요청했습니다.

 

이번 <자비의 희년>은 신에게 죄의 용서를 비는 연중 행사로, 원칙적으로 25년마다 있는 정기 희년과 별도로 교황이 선포한 특별 희년입니다. 기간은 <원죄 없이 잉태된 동정녀 마리아 대축일>인 12월 8일부터 내년 <그리스도 왕 대축일>인 11월 20일입니다.

 

교황은 지금까지도 낙태와 동성애에 대해 '교회는 마음 좁은 약정에 구애돼서는 안된다'고 말하는 등 카톨릭이 금지 입장을 취하는 것에 대해 유연한 자세를 취할 생각을 나타내고 있습니다.

Why no mention of the men who got these women in the family way and left them to their own devices? Surely that is a sin just as great if it is to be a sin at all? A sin requiring two people demands equal application of penalty. That is where the Church must either remit or apply its flaw.

What happens when this Jubilee year is over? Back into the pits of unforgivingness? I wonder about a church whose priests would be permitted to forgive the likes of Fred West of Harold Shipman, but a 12 year old who terminates a pregnancy caused by a rapist is condemned to hell for ever? What WOULD their god as described in the gospels think of that?

Pope Francis isn't doing anything new or granting to authority to priests. The article is completely twisting his words. The Catholic Church has never denied absolution to anyone who expresses sorrow for their sins.

Agreed. They also don't "send people to hell". No human being has the power to do that. The Church tries to appeal to one's conscience, heart & mind to honestly consider all the spiritual ramifications of one's choices, words and actions.

The Church has ALWAYS forgiven women who ask to be forgiven. I don't understand this article. It makes it out as though the Church is cruel. That is NOT true. I wish these journalists would read up on Catholic teachings. They always twist the truth.
